Eigen risico (deductible) 2027
The eigen risico is the mandatory deductible: the amount you pay yourself each calendar year for care covered by basic insurance, before your insurer starts paying.
ProvisionalThese amounts for 2027 are provisional. They become final once the government and parliament have decided.
The mandatory deductible in 2027 is €400. On top of that, you can choose a voluntary deductible (vrijwillig eigen risico) of €100, €200, €300, €400, €500. Your premium then goes down. With the highest voluntary deductible, you pay at most €900 yourself in 2027.

Frequently asked questions
What is the eigen risico (deductible)?
The eigen risico is the amount you pay yourself each calendar year for care covered by Dutch basic insurance. Only after that does your insurer pay. It applies to everyone aged 18 or over. In 2027, the mandatory deductible is €400.
Which care is exempt from the deductible?
You pay no deductible for your GP (huisarts), district nursing (wijkverpleging), midwifery and maternity care, and integrated chronic care (ketenzorg) for conditions such as diabetes, COPD or asthma and cardiovascular disease. Children under 18 have no deductible. Care covered by supplementary insurance does not count towards the deductible either.
Does a voluntary deductible pay off?
That depends on your expected care costs. You get a premium discount, but you pay more yourself if you use care that counts towards the deductible. My comparison tool calculates your yearly cost for every policy at every deductible level. That is information, not advice: you decide.
When and how do I pay the deductible?
Usually your insurer sends you a bill after you have received care, or settles the amount with you. Many insurers let you pay the deductible in instalments. Ask your insurer about the conditions.
Is a personal contribution (eigen bijdrage) the same as the deductible?
No. A personal contribution is a fixed amount or percentage you always pay yourself for certain care, for example maternity care or some medical aids and medicines. You pay it in addition to the deductible.
What if I am insured for only part of the year?
If your insurance starts or ends during the year, for example because you turn 18 or move to the Netherlands, the deductible is calculated pro rata for the number of days you are insured.
