Basic health insurance (basisverzekering)
The mandatory Dutch health insurance, with a standard package set by the government that is the same at every insurer.
Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands and is covered by the Long-term Care Act (Wlz) must have basic health insurance. The government decides what it covers, such as GP care, hospital care and most medicines, and that is the same at every insurer. Insurers must accept everyone and charge everyone the same premium for the same policy, regardless of age or health. Children under 18 are insured free of charge. Insurers do differ in premium, policy type (natura, restitutie, combination or budget), choice of care providers and service. If you move to the Netherlands for work, you usually have to take out basic insurance within four months; it then applies retroactively.
